Hamamelis virginiana L. (or witch hazel) is a deciduous tree native to the Atlantic coast of North America, widely included in skin care products. According to the EMA Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC), hamamelis bark contains a higher percentage of tannins than leaves (8–12% vs. 3–10%) and a higher content of hamamelitannin (HT, 1–7%), the main characteristic constituent of witch hazel.
